Once you loose your language you ve lost part of, stop speaking only oyibo to your kids and within yourselves. It will be a double tragedy for us in Nigeria when we finally abandon all that we represent. Eji m aha chineke na ayo unu nile!!!!
EMMY YOU ARE SO RIGHT. THE SHAMEFUL THING ABOUT THIS WHOLE ORDEAL IS SOME OF OUR PEOPLE WANTS TO LOOSE IT. I'VE MET FELLOW IGBOS IN THE PAST WHO CAME TO USA IN THEIR TEENS BUT NOW AT THEIR LATE 20THS, THEY CANT SPEAK IGBO ANYMORE AND THEY THINK ITS CUTE, I PITTY UNU NILE NA EME OTU AHU. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO TRAVELED OUT OF 9JA WHEN YOU WAS A BABY, TRY TO MAKE IGBO FRIENDS AND MAKE THEM AS WELL AS YOUR FAMILY SPEAK IGBO TO YOU. NDE-EWO UNU.
Umu Igbo Unite in Atlanta is offering Igbo lessons for all those people who may have grown up here and aren't quite comfortable with speaking the language. The classes are great and I would encourage anyone to attend. It's time we stopped criticizing the offspring of parents that didn't make it a priority to teach their kids and started helping those interested in speaking Igbo. For those interested in the language, check out our website at www.umuigbounite.com
Geli, do you really wanna know my opinion on this? If yes, here it goes – a true Igbo speaks Igbo, yes it is a crime, not a criminal case anyway but is a crime and a shame. How will you feel as a citizen of USA for instance, and you cannot even say “come”. language is an indispensable part of culture and self honour, any nation that respects itself strives hard to keep their language not just alive but clean.
So my sister, incase you cannot speak Igbo, I suggest that you take time out and stay in Naija, or better still join the group that Amaka is talking about.
Even if I marry oyibo, take it from me, my kids will speak Igbo still.
crime n abomination aint same. so it aint no crime for an igbo not to know how to speak igbo, but then, it's an abomination for those who aint making any efforts to learn the language. Being unable to speak ur mother tongue's just the same as having no roots. dat's why i appreciate the efforts of our people who are trying to learn the language. so geli, if cant speak ur language, then, go look for ur roots...
did i steal any of your properties? why are you casting me like this? this quesion was meant for emmy and not you. i dont know why you just want to pounce on me when i didnt do you anything. please am a very good girl with a decent mind and i'd never want to quarrel with anybody. everybody is free to ask questions and express their opinion in a matured way but not at the expense of another persons rep. please o. no offense.
Babe girl am sorry if I it sounded castigating, I never meant to, I was talking generally not really personally to you. But you do agree with me that speaking Igbo is a necessity for any true Igbo. Abi you no think so?
i agree wit u dat speaking igbo is necessary. Our language is our identity, if we lose it we lose everytin. I know personnaly i find it difficult specking but i understand and definately wen i ve kids i'll try all i can 4 teach dem(wit d help of my parents). I know rite now Igbo's might nt ve a say in wat happens in our country, but d time is comin wen witout d igbo's ntin can be done.(dats wat i believe).
